What Is Portable Appliance Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT for short) is the inspection and testing of all portable electrical appliances to ensure the safety of the appliance itself and the health and safety of the employee(s) using the equipment.
What Is Classed As A "Portable Appliance"?
A portable appliance is any item of electrical equipment (i.e. heater, air conditioning unit, kettle etc.) that has a power lead with a plug which must be connected to the mains electricity supply when in use
Is it a Legal Requirement for PAT Testing Be Carried Out?
Although not currently a legal requirement – it is the duty and responsibility of the employer/employees to uphold the health and safety of all workers by ensuring that all appliances are in good repair and in efficient working order.
The Electricity At Work Regulations 1989 state "every employer shall ensure, that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair"
The regulations also state "As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger" (Regulation 4(2))
How Frequently Should I Have My Appliances Tested?
There are currently no hard and fast rules concerning how often you should have your appliances tested however there are obviously recommendations based on a) the type and age of the appliance being used and b) the environment where the appliance is being used.
Will Our Insurance Company Request or Insist on PAT Testing?
This is usually standard policy with most insurance companies and yes they may very well request that PAT Testing be carried out on all appliances being used. In fact many insurance companies will INSIST on PAT Testing prior to the renewal of a policy. Please bear in mind that it may also affect your insurance cover if your Insurance Company can prove that you failed to comply with their regulations.
